Sunday, 6.06.10.
The weather report for Sunday was glum. We decided to drive out to Southampton anyway. And, as it turned out, it was a sunny, easy-breezy kind of day. So much for the threat of rain; it passed us right by.
1. First things first, we found the beach. This is the tree-lined street that led us to the big water we both love.
2. That's me, trudging along, as we arrive at Phyllis' beach. Phyllis being the mother of Kim, a chef I work with who recommended the spot and secured us free parking at her mom's! I don't know the actual name of the beach, but as far as I'm concerned, "Phyllis' beach" it is.
3. Wolffer winery, a short drive from P's beach. Lovely wine and cheese. Lovelier husband. Oh, and knowledgeable and accommodating staff.

4. Pretty trees I wanted to make into a dress.
5. Roadside strawberries that later turned to pie.
6. Every day has some of these :)
7. My favorite snack of the week: Carrot chips -- great for dipping! And they were exactly what I needed after getting home from the beach/winery/2hr drive, before I could even think about anything else. I dipped in dill hummus.
8. Inside: Red Jacket Orchards' rhubarb (delivered early this morning from FreshDirect), and a good handful of the strawberries we picked up in Southampton. The rhubarb and strawberries were a vibrant red going into the pie shell, it was a shame to cover it with the crumble topping, except that the topping was a perfect base note to the tart and tangy of the filling (topping was improvised based on what was around... flour and light brown sugar plus whole buckwheat groats and almonds that were given a few pulses in the food processor.... ok, and some -- not a lot -- of the clarified butter I had in the freezer from the last time I made lobstah for fred). The end result was a sweet taste of summer; and small portions with big flavor means we enjoyed ourselves without going overboard. Incidentally, this was my first experience with rhubarb, and I can see what all the fuss is about!
