EatWell

Same drill. Early morning sunshine woke me. Except this morning I had a mission. I had to get myself to the Castro for my first day as an intern at WellCall. For those not in the know, the Castro is SF’s expansive gay district where rainbow flags are more ubiquitous than happy homeless. It is also home to numerous eateries and shops I cannot afford, but appreciate.

The WellCall office is housed on the second floor of an old Victorian whose entryway was barricaded by a white, knee-high, plastic baby door meant to keep David from escaping. David is the dog who is sometimes called Henry because he doesn’t really look like a David.

The office staff was warm, welcoming, and a greater percentage (natural) blond than I am used to seeing in New York. Had they multiplied while I was away, or had my sense of norms changed? I felt my loyalties sway – was I more New Yorker or Californian? The CEO felt my dilemma in reverse – she grew up in New York, but was now in SF. We commiserated over feeling simultaneously familiar and foreign in old stomping grounds.

I got along well with everyone I met today. I even met another swing dancer, Pascal the programmer, whom I will likely see out dancing tomorrow night. Strange how worlds collide, especially since it was a dancer (thanks, David!) who put me in touch with his company.

Aside from chatting with the staff and admiring David/Henry, I also managed to have a very productive meeting regarding my summer project. Most of my job can and will be taking place outside the sunny office at Castro and 19th where flip-flops are entirely adequate footwear. The project is to plan and create content, assessment and tracking tools, features, and tip sheets for a 3-month long online health promotion program called EatWell. It breaks down into 12 modules; one week per module. At this point, the biggest challenge is narrowing down and organizing topics into appropriately sequenced modules.

And now, to get started. Any advice?
